Military Makeover – Helping Veterans Return to Civilian Life

Military Makeover is a TV show that airs on Lifetime TV. The host is a talk show legend and veteran of the Navy and Marine Corps, Montel Williams. The show aims to bring a bit of help to the servicemen and women as well as their families across the country.

The show works in collaboration with numerous companies, such as  MyComputerCareer, alongside contractors, home improvement professionals, and landscape artists, transforming the homes of veterans and bring them a bit more joy into their life.

Challenges Facing Veterans Returning From Service

There are numerous challenges facing veterans returning to civilian life. The most immediate of these is the physical and psychological issues that are a result of military service. Various wounds, scars, and even lost limbs – some of which will never fully heal – plague many veterans trying to integrate back into society.

Then, there are the equally devastating psychological effects, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs,  31 percent of Vietnam veterans, 10 percent of Gulf War (Desert Storm) veterans, 11 percent of veterans of the war in Afghanistan, and 20 percent of Iraqi war veterans are all suffering from various forms of PTSD. The consequences of this illness should not be underestimated, either. This mental illness will affect not only the sufferers but also their families, often leading to depression, substance abuse, or even suicide.

Other challenges include things like reuniting with their families. During their time away, their families may have created new routines. With their return, both the family and the veteran will have to readjust. There are also many other, seemingly mundane things that most of us are accustomed to, but veterans struggle with or have no knowledge of how to undertake. Things like providing for necessities, acquiring services (doctor, dentist, insurance, etc.) are all things many veterans didn’t have to deal with until now.

The issue of finding a civilian job can generally be a daunting task, resulting in many months of unemployment, sometimes exacerbating the feeling of depression. They need to figure out how to translate their military skills and how they apply in a civilian setting, create a resume, catching up on the latest job trends, learning new skills, etc.

MyComputerCareer Is Lending a Hand

MyComputerCareer is proud of being part of the Military Makeover project, helping veteran families across the nation with their home renovations. We do not only sponsor these families but also send our team of volunteers to help out in the project.

As part of Military Makeover, we’ve helped three veteran families in 2018 and will continue with four more families in 2019. As part of this project we not only hope to raise awareness of the problems veterans and their families have to face once they return home, but also to give something back to these men and women who’ve put everything on the line for our country.
