From Mr. Mom to IT Desktop Support

Kelly Harris went from working as a stay-at-home Dad (Mr. Mom, he says) to obtaining a Desktop Support Technician position that had the benefits his family needed.

“After High school I entered the Army. The M.O.S. (Military Occupational Service) I chose was communications. I chose this because I thought that there would be good job security after my separation from the Military. However, due to the Army having essentially different names for certain certifications or that the the skills were hard for me to translate, I was unable to find a job. With a newborn baby and no job, I settled into the “Mr. Mom” role to do what I could to support my family.

My disability from the V.A. was able to keep a roof over our heads. My wife’s job handled all the other bills and expenses. We were living paycheck to paycheck. Once we moved back home to Dallas,TX, my son was old enough to start going to school. I figured that it was time for me to go back to school too. I wanted to try to find a way back into the IT field. I had heard of MyComputerCareer on my favorite local rock radio station. It seemed like the best place to do exactly that.

Once enrolled, I was blown away by all the support. They did everything they could to assist me in my education. Especially when I came across hurdles in my personal life throughout my education. The Flex Instructors would stay late to help me with any parts of the courses that I wasn’t grasping. Career Services helped me polish my resume until it was amazing. They also helped me secure many phone interviews. The Office Administrators were always there to help me when needed – be it printing out different material, scheduling my certification tests or even just lending a sympathetic ear when I was having a bad day. Everyone at the Dallas Campus helped me to not only re-acquire many of my certifications, but they also helped me obtain my new job with a company that has AMAZING benefits and a salary that is impacting my household.”

From all of us here at MyComputerCareer (especially YOUR Dallas Campus Family)…Congratulations Kelly! You worked hard and it paid off. We can’t wait to see where your experience and education takes you next.
