Cybersecurity is a top priority

From Novice to Professional

5 Resources for Ethical Hackers

With cybercrime at an all-time high, it’s no wonder that 74% of businesses consider cybersecurity a top priority. This also comes at a time when just over a quarter of businesses has a cybersecurity policy put in place. Now is the perfect time to become an ethical hacker, and if you already are one, it’s time to go fully professional.

For those who don’t know, an ethical hacker is a security professional that follows the same mindset as a cybercriminal. This professional uses the same tools and knowledge to detect and fix any security issues within a company’s systems. Certified Ethical Hackers (CEHs) should not be confused with Certified Information Systems Security Professionals (CISSPs). CISSPs are responsible for setting up a security system, while a CEH tries to break into that system, looking for any vulnerabilities and weak spots.

MyComputerCareer is an organization that provides certification preparation for anyone looking to become a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH). Contact us for more information! Below are several resources that you can use to advance your ethical hacker career.

Useful Tools and Resources for Ethical Hackers

The Web Application Hacker’s Handbook – Anyone who is seriously considering working in web application security should read this textbook. It provides a comprehensive overview of all major attack categories, and it will teach you how to tackle each one of them, in part. Do keep in mind that it’s almost a thousand pages. Nevertheless, it’s advisable that you read it in its entirety.

Vulnhub.comThis is a tool that’s great for beginners since it will teach you how to use some of the tools found in Hydra, Burp Suite, or Nmap. While some of the virtual machines here may be a bit difficult to set up, they can prove to be a good learning experience as well.

Pentesterlabs.comThis platform offers many lessons on specific attack paths. Though it requires a small monthly fee, it’s well worth the investment. Some of the lessons and exercises may be easy for you, depending on your skill level. Even so, you can still learn some new tips and tricks that will come in handy.

Hackthebox.eu – While this tool is easier to use than Vulnhub, this platform doesn’t offer any walkthroughs. As such, Hack the Box is a great place to test yourself. You can use your application security and network knowledge to try to hack a machine. Keep in mind that it may take you days, in some cases, so your commitment and dedication towards cybersecurity will also be put to the test.

Praetorian Tech Challenges – This is something more thorough and comprehensive than any of the other resources above. It covers a wide range of cybersecurity-related material, going from brute-forcing, machine learning, cryptography, etc.

While the list presented here is not exhaustive, it does cover several tools and resources that will put you on the path to becoming a professional ethical hacker.
