Demetreous Lovelace, a January graduate of MyCC’s Information Technology Security and Administration program, virtually sat down with us to discuss his thoughts on the support in the program and to update us on what he’s up to now. (Hint: He’s doing great in his IT career and loving it)
Q: Hi, Demetreous. Do you mind sharing how your journey started here at MyComputerCareer?
Demetreous: Sure. I moved from Cleveland, Tenn., to the suburbs of Atlanta, Ga., hoping to restart my life and meet people with similar interests and shared points of view. I also made the move for some personal reasons and because I learned the job market was booming in the area.
I’ve always been tech-savvy and was looking for an opportunity to do something in IT and grow my roots in Atlanta. My future housemate introduced me to MyCC’s program and I fiercely jumped at the opportunity knowing this was the moment to turn my life around for the better.
Q: So you jumped into the program but hit a bump in the road along the way. Tell us a little about that experience.
Demetreous: Yeah, everything was going how it was supposed to until the third month into the ITSA program. My then friend and roommate decided to go their separate ways and I found myself homeless with bills to be paid. This also meant I struggled to find wifi to attend classes and do homework. Those were some dark and cloudy weeks in my life.
Q: But you found a way to keep going, even through that pretty massive challenge?
Demetreous: Had to! I remember having to go to coffee shops in order to keep learning and just to keep myself afloat. One of my favorite parts about MyComputerCareer was connecting with people who pushed me to do my best and believe in myself.
Q: Do you have any examples of this support?
Demetreous: It was great meeting people that motivated me. One of my inspirations was Assistant Director of Education Terrance Robinson. He always had a smile and encouraged me no matter what. The second inspiration was Joyce Sieben (Career Services Specialist). Whether it was about interest in my life or helping me create a draft of my resume, she was in touch with me every week. Joyce also helped me apply for jobs, eventually leading to an amazing offer. And even when there were some bumps in the road during the onboarding process, Joyce worked with me to address and resolve the issue right away.
Q: Love to hear this, Demetreous. So that leads perfectly to this last question. What are you doing now?
Demetreous: As mentioned, I’m very happy to say I’m employed and have zero stress about my current job at Asurion because of the troubleshooting and technical knowledge I acquired during my time at MyCC. There are some aspects of the position that are a bit tricky, but I’m getting the hang of it. Completing the program at MyComputerCareer not only showed me where I could go, but gave me the support to get there. And this is just the beginning…
