Federal shutdown impact on financial aid information

If you’re a current student loan borrower or considering federal financial aid for an upcoming enrollment, you might be a bit anxious about the effects of the government shutdown on your education funding. As you navigate your educational journey, concerns over funding might understandably weigh heavy, so we wanted to share the most recent guidance and information we’ve collected on what to expect moving forward.

First and foremost federal financial aid like Pell Grant, direct student loans (all Title IV funding), and GI Bill payments will not be immediately affected by the government shutdown – and disbursements will continue.

Here’s what you can expect about Title IV funds:

  • As mentioned, financial aid disbursements will continue as usual, per the Department of Education
  • Student loan payments will continue as scheduled, so do your best not to miss a payment as it remains a requirement
  • The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) remains available for anyone who needs to complete the application. However, there could be some delays in processing so submit those applications as soon as possible.

Here’s what we know about the GI Bill:

  • No, your GI Bill should not be directly affected by the shutdown
  • Tuition and housing payments are slated to continue
  • The GI hotline is temporarily closed
  • There could be some administrative delays potentially impacting processing new claims, etc.

Here’s how you should move forward:

  • Continue making scheduled payments to avoid falling behind
  • Plan ahead for possible FAFSA delays and be sure to submit your application ASAP
  • Stay in contact with your MyComputerCareer network, including advisors from the Financial Aid and Admissions teams
  • Be patient: Delays can be frustrating so don’t add extra pressure on circumstances out of your control.
