Veterans Talk About PTSD with Counselor

Real Talk About PTSD

U.S. military service members sacrifice a lot, even their mental health, to defend our country.

Many veterans suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is a long-term mental health condition caused by traumatic events which veterans often live through during their time in the service, and today we want to talk about PTSD.

Symptoms such as unexplained memory loss, flashbacks, nightmares, or anxiety symptoms triggered by everyday events, can be signs of PTSD.

For veterans like Command Sergeant Major Jason VanKleeck, PTSD was a daily struggle. Click on the video to hear him talk about his experience with PTSD and discuss how counseling is an effective way to get help.

PTSD doesn’t happen only to military members. Symptoms can be caused in any setting by an event which makes someone feel helpless to protect themselves from emotional or physical pain.

Let’s look at a few examples of events which can trigger PTSD, but are not typically recognized traumatic experiences:

  • Finding out that a loved one had an accident and is in the hospital
  • Getting fired from a job
  • Infidelity or cheating in a relationship

So what is the solution, the cure or “fix” for PTSD? The truth is, there is none. For most people, PTSD will always be a part of their lives in some form.

However, if you are willing to commit to the work, patience, and trust that it takes to stick to an effective treatment plan, you can get better at managing your PTSD symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Thanks to decades of research, PTSD and effective ways to manage its symptoms are well understood. Findings are clear: one of the most effective methods of treatment is mental health counseling.
