From DoorDash to IT: How Christopher Phillips Took a Chance on MyComputerCareer’s IT Training Program

Christopher Phillips heard the MyComputerCareer ad on a local radio station and almost let it pass.

“I didn’t want to call because I didn’t see it for myself,” Christopher said.

He was doing DoorDash to keep up with bills. No steady career. No clear plan. Then his son arrived, and the math changed fast.

“I knew I wanted to give him the world, but at the time I was unemployed and doing DoorDash just to keep up with bills. I felt the pressure of needing to do better, not just for me, but for him.”

So he picked up the phone. He connected with an enrollment advisor, learned more about the program, and enrolled. “The more I learned, the more I felt like this could be my way into a real career.”

What were the first 30 days of IT training really like?

Christopher didn’t sugarcoat it.

“The first 30 days were tough. I was literally forcing myself to go. I still didn’t grasp everything, but I knew I had to keep going. I couldn’t give up.”

There were moments he wanted to quit. But every time he thought about walking away, the same thing pulled him back.

“I kept thinking about my son and why I started, and that kept me going.”

At home, his wife held things together. “My wife was very supportive,” he said. That support made balancing school and family possible during the hardest stretch.

How did Career Services help Christopher land his IT job?

After graduation, finding that first IT job took longer than Christopher expected.

“After graduation, it wasn’t easy finding a job. I was so discouraged because I couldn’t find one on my own,” Christopher said. “I’ve never been the person to really ask for help. So, I just went and looked for the jobs myself.”

His wife pushed him to contact Career Services. “Reach out. That’s what they’re there for.”

When he finally did, his Career Services advisor connected him to one of MyComputerCareer’s employer partnerships. The result? Christopher landed a role at OneSupport as a support specialist.

“I really honestly love where I’m at right now. And I owe that to MyCC.”

What’s next for Christopher?

“In the future, I see myself continuing to grow in IT and gaining more experience and certifications. My long-term goal is to start my own IT company and build something of my own. I want to create opportunities not just for myself, but for others too.”

Christopher’s advice for anyone on the fence

“If you hear it on the radio, if you see it online and you have one feeling that, hey, I wonder if I can do that… you will never know until you try.”

“Just believe in yourself, invest in yourself, and do it.”

The Bottom Line

Christopher walked into MyComputerCareer without a job, without a plan, and without confidence that IT was something he could pull off. He walked out a graduate with a support specialist role, a growing career in IT, and a long-term goal that would have felt impossible a few years ago. The phone call he almost didn’t make turned out to be the most important one of his career.
