Fast Track Programs

Employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Because of this, nationally accredited programs like MyComputerCareer offer quick, convenient and effective programs in information technology.

“MyComputerCareer students can earn IT certificates from IT organizations such as Microsoft, Cisco Systems, CompTIA and EC-Council. We put students in real-world scenarios and provide them with unlimited one-on-one tutoring to help them master these concepts,” said Tony Galati, president and CEO of MyComputerCareer. “Some of the roles our students fill are in IT practitioner, management or administration positions, as well as jobs in IT security, network administration or help desk.”

Not only do these schools provide programs that complement students’ passions, schedules and budgets, but many community colleges offer fast-track programs.

With fast-track programs ranging from health sciences to information technology, students can achieve their goals more quickly and economically.

Some of the most popular programs with local two-year colleges are those pertaining to health sciences, as the healthcare industry is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024 – adding about 2.3 million new jobs – according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“With Houston being home to the world’s largest medical district, many programs are developed to train and graduate students in a short amount of time to meet the health care industry needs for skilled professionals,” said Dr. Alexander Okwonna, dean of natural sciences and health sciences at San Jacinto College South Campus. “We offer certificate programs for students who need the necessary training within a year to gain immediate employment. We also offer associate degree programs for students who want to get ahead and have credentials and work as they prepare to transfer to a university for their bachelor’s degrees.”

San Jacinto College’s health science courses and programs include phlebotomy, requiring eight weeks of training; the emergency medical technician and paramedics program, requiring one to two years of training; medical laboratory technology, requiring two years of training; various nursing programs, ranging from four to six weeks to two years of training; and the pharmacy technician program, requiring one year of training.

Health sciences isn’t the only in-demand field with fast-track program options; students will find options that help them pursue careers in high-skill occupations such as construction, transportation and logistics.

“Typically, these are certificate programs, and many have industry credentials associated with them. Houston Community College is particularly excited about computer programming and automotive technology programs, which just received a state grant,” said Michael Webster, associate vice chancellor of workforce instruction at Houston Community College, which offers more than 50 areas of study through its continuing education program.

Houston Community College also offers HCC Weekend College, a popular program designed to allow students to complete associate degrees in two years by attending classes only on Saturday.

“In this program, students can earn associate degrees in business and business administration management with specializations. Certificates for core curriculum and business administration/management are also offered. The program has proven to be quite successful in meeting the needs of working students,” said Norma Perez, associate vice chancellor of curriculum at Houston Community College.
