From A Past that Didn’t Define a Future

Nikolas has overcome a lot of obstacles to get where he is today. Nick is an Army Veteran that enrolled into our Live Online Program. Currently, he has several certifications and is set to graduate in March of 2018. When Nikolas met with his Career Services Director, many of their conversations centered around Nik’s military past, service related issues and his extreme desire to never leave his family again. He insisted he only wanted to travel no more than a 10-mile radius to and from work. Nikolas and his Career Services Director worked very diligently to establish employer relationships with Nik’s criteria for employment in mind.

Nik soon received an offer with a company called KForce. Unfortunately, this job did require him to travel a little more than he wanted to. But Nik did accept this position. However, his PTSD hindered his success. After much discussion between Nik and his Career Services Director, this job just wasn’t going to work out for him and his career goals. They talked through his resignation which wasn’t easy for Nik. After a few more days of hard work, Nik was hired with Amazon to make ends meet while they continue to search for the perfect position that fit what Nik needed.

Here is what Nik had to say…

“I started at Amazon on a Wednesday. While I was on my lunch break, I got a phone call from a recruiter for the Computer Consultant job at St. Luke’s Hospital saying I could start the upcoming Friday! I was able to quit the emergency Amazon job, after only working there for 3.5 hours. I started at St. Luke’s  two days later. It is the start of a very promising career in IT.

I’m currently just a contractor through Talon Professional Services, but most of St. Luke’s full time IT guys started at Talon and then got permanently hired on. It’s Monday-Friday position with hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm.

I am going to be replacing all the old printers across the health network (7 main hospitals and countless clinics across eastern PA and part of Jersey) with new printers. I have a meeting tomorrow morning to go over the logistics and how that will all work. They had someone doing my job but she quit, and she only did 1 or 2 hospital’s worth of printers, so I still have a lot of work ahead of me. St. Luke’s is expanding a lot too, so there will be other projects for me to move to after this and lots of opportunity for better positions.

This is what I’ve wanted to do all along, IT for a hospital. I really like the idea of fixing computers in this environment and everyone I’ve met is just really nice. I can’t wait to see where it takes me. My plan now is for my wife and I to work super hard, get a car before the end of the month (since ours got totaled and we are currently using my mom’s) and then in the not too distant future, have enough saved up to move out of my parent’s and buy our first house. Fingers crossed that it all works out! 🙂 !  Sincerely Grateful, Nik ”
